Gold (XAU/USD) rose on Friday, with investors continuing to pay attention to the Fed's expectations and looking forward to key U.S. economic data. As of writing, XAU/USD has rebounded to above $3,350, with the price close to the upper boundary of the symmetrical triangle pattern.
Traders are digesting new U.S. housing data released on Friday, with construction permits and new home starts in June providing further insights into the health of the real estate industry, showing significant improvements.
Preliminary readings for the University of Michigan (UoM) consumer sentiment data and inflation expectations are scheduled to be released at 14:00 GMT. The monthly report is based on consumers’ perceptions of the current U.S. economic environment and their potential expectations for the next 12 months. As a leading economic indicator, it usually sets expectations, sentiment and potential prospects for the economy.
As the Federal Reserve continues to maintain interest rates within the current range of 4.25%-4.50%, investors continue to look for new clues about the Fed's possible rate cut. According to CME Fed Observation Tool, the market expects the probability of a 25 basis point cut in September to be 56.2%, while the probability of keeping interest rates unchanged at the same meeting is 41.2%.
Gold technical analysis: XAU/USD restores confidence when the price exceeds $3,350
Gold price fluctuates in range on Friday, trading at a price slightly above $3,350, and continues to consolidate in the symmetric triangle pattern. The next resistance is at $3,362, downtrend resistance in the chart pattern.
The 23.6% Fibonacci retracement from April low to high is available at $3,371.
Breaking through this level will be exposed$3,400, a key psychological and structural barrier followed by $3,452 near the April high.
In the downside, the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) provides initial support at $3,324. The 38.2% Fibonacci level provides a more solid bottom support at $3,292.
Continuous breakdown below this level will turn the focus toward the 100-day SMA and 50% Fibonacci level at $3,228.
The triangle's downward breakout will suggest a return to bearish pressure, with $3,200 likely targeting.
The relative strength index (RSI) hovers around 52, with the momentum remaining balanced, emphasizing the hesitation of traders when waiting for directional catalysts.
