GBP/USD rebounds in U.S. economic uncertainty

The British Pound (GBP) rebounded to nearly 1.2930 during the European trading session on Monday, hitting a one-month low of 1.2830 earlier. The pound/dollar attracted buying orders as U.S. President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday. The dollar index (DXY), which tracks the value of the dollar against six major currencies, fell to nearly 102.40.

Finance market participants are growing concerns about the outlook for the U.S. economy, as Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said Friday that the president's exceeding expectations could lead to a recovery in inflation and a slowdown in economic growth. “We are facing a highly uncertain outlook, with both unemployment and inflation at risk of rising rates,” Powell said in a preparation speech delivered at the annual meeting of the Association for Business Editors and Writing.

When asked about the impact of Trump's tariffs on the monetary policy outlook, Powell continued to take a "waiting" attitude and said: "The Fed is ready before waiting for a clearer situation."

At the same time, market experts now believe that Trump's severe tariffs on U.S. trading partners may push the U.S. economy into recession. Investment banking xm-links.companies Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase have raised the probability of the U.S. entering a recession to 45% and 60% respectively.

This week, investors will pay attention to the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released on Thursday. Technical analysis: pound rebounds to close to the 20-day exponential moving average

The pound attempted to rebound from 1.2830 on Monday, after a sharp pullback after hitting a six-month high of 1.3207 on Thursday. GBP/USDxm-links.comtrading is close to the 20-day index moving average (EMA), about 1.2930. If the pair can stay above the 20-day EMA, the short-term trend will turn bullish.

The 14th-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) fell below 60.00, indicating that the bullish momentum has ended. However, as long as it remains above the 40.00 level, the bullish bias remains.

Looking down, the 50% Fibonacci retracement drawn from the late September high to the mid-January low will be the key support range for the pair. Looking upward, the April 3 high of 1.3207 will be the key resistance range.
